Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus trained into orchard architecture. Success depends on aerated roots, stable posts, open canopies, and compatible flowers meeting viable pollen.

Commercial pitaya belongs mainly to Selenicereus. Its segmented stems climb, spill over a support, flower on mature hanging growth, and can remain productive for years.
