A commercial nursery is a traceability and plant-health system, not merely a place where cuttings make roots. Quality lost here is multiplied across the orchard.

Timing depends on temperature, humidity, cutting condition, media, and system. Advance lots by observed readiness criteria rather than a promised number of days.

01 / Select

Qualify mother blocks

Use correctly identified, true-to-type plants with recorded performance and no active suspicious lesions, rot, or severe pest pressure. Do not harvest from a block under unresolved decline.

02 / Cut

Choose sound cladodes

Select mature, firm, undamaged segments of practical handling length. Preserve orientation, avoid stressed or freshly succulent tissue, and assign a lot before material leaves the block.

03 / Sanitize

Control every contact

Use clean benches, containers, and sharp tools. Remove soil and plant debris first, then disinfect tools under a validated nursery procedure between mother plants or risk groups.

04 / Callus

Dry the wound safely

Hold cuttings in a clean, shaded, ventilated area until cut surfaces are dry and callused. Prevent rain splash, condensation, stacking injury, overheating, and loss of labels.

05 / Root

Favor air with moisture

Set the basal end into clean, free-draining medium. Stabilize without deep burial. Irrigate lightly and by observed need; saturation around an unrooted base raises failure risk.

06 / Grade

Inspect, isolate, reject

Separate lots and remove soft, discolored, collapsed, pest-infested, mislabeled, or poorly rooted plants. Diagnose recurring patterns rather than repeatedly trimming symptoms.

07 / Harden

Shift exposure gradually

Increase light, airflow, and irrigation interval in steps matched to the destination. Avoid a sudden move from protected nursery shade into full heat, wind, or water stress.

08 / Release

Verify transplant readiness

Release only stable, correctly oriented plants with a firm base, active roots holding the medium, healthy new growth, durable labels, and a traceable field assignment.

Protect health,
identity & uniformity.

Separate mother blocks from incoming material and production waste. Define clean-to-dirty movement for people, tools, carts, water, media, and discarded tissue.

  • Mother block selectionConfirm clone source, flowering and fruit traits, known pollination observations, pest history, and freedom from unresolved symptoms. Replace declining mother plants.
  • TraceabilityUse a unique lot linking mother plant or block, cultivar label, cutter, date, tool-sanitation event, count, media batch, bench, treatments, inspections, rejects, and customer or field block.
  • Water and media hygieneUse clean containers and a reproducible, well-drained medium. Keep pots off contaminated ground and prevent drainage from one risk group entering another.
  • Environmental recordsLog shade level or location, major temperature events, irrigation, rain exposure, and movement dates so failure clusters can be investigated.
  • Release samplingCheck label integrity, basal firmness, root distribution, pest signs, lesions, uniformity, and survival after a representative hardening period.

Base softens after potting

Isolate the lot. Review callus condition, orientation, burial depth, medium drainage, irrigation, wounds, and contaminated flow. Do not assume one pathogen from appearance alone.

No roots or weak anchorage

Check cutting maturity and polarity, basal damage, temperature, moisture extremes, medium air space, and time. Avoid compensating with chronic saturation.

Bleached or corked surfaces

Compare exposure history and lesion progression. Abrupt hardening can cause sun injury, but expanding or spreading lesions require diagnostic attention.

Uneven lot growth

Audit mother position, segment maturity, cutting size, rooting depth, emitter delivery, shade pattern, media fill, and label mixtures before changing nutrition.

Pests appear on new growth

Quarantine affected lots, inspect nearby plants and ants, clean the area, and identify the organism. Incoming plant material should never bypass isolation.

Labels and plants disagree

Stop release. Quarantine the affected lineage and reconstruct records. Appearance alone may not reliably resolve closely related clones; identity uncertainty is a quality failure.

03 / Other methods
Use the method for the objective

Cuttings lead.
Other tools differ.

Vegetative cuttings preserve a selected clone and usually fit commercial orchard establishment. Seed and grafting serve different purposes and controls.

Seed

Useful for breeding, not clone fidelity

Seedlings segregate genetically, take longer to evaluate, and cannot be assumed true to the fruit or parent name. Keep seedling populations separately coded and evaluate fruit, adaptation, and pollination behavior before any release.

Grafting

A specialized trial tool

Grafting may be explored for rapid evaluation, rescue, or combining selected material, but compatibility, disease transfer, union strength, architecture, and long-term field value need validation. It is not a substitute for clean stock.

Plant movement

Check legal status first

Cuttings can move pests and pathogens. Follow current quarantine, phytosanitary, import, certification, and nursery-sale requirements for both origin and destination.

Sanitation caution: disinfectant choice, concentration, contact time, worker protection, disposal, and crop safety are product- and jurisdiction-specific. Use only lawful, labeled products and a validated procedure; this guide does not prescribe products or rates.

04 / Grafting & Seed Bench
Grafting & seed bench — after cuttings

Know why.

Cuttings preserve a selected clone for commercial uniformity. Grafting and seed serve narrower bench goals — rescue, rapid test, multi-cultivar assembly, or breeding — with added hygiene, identity and validation burdens that need cautious handling.

V-cut 95 · L-cut 100 · Cleft 101

Graft types on the bench

V-cut (95) nests a wedge scion into a V on the stock for cambial contact on two faces. L-cut (100) uses a single shoulder cut, useful where stock and scion diameters differ. Cleft (101) splits the stock and seats one or two scions. All are trial tools first: purpose determines whether the union ever merits field scale.

Multi-variety 94 / 97

Multi-cultivar assemblies

Four-on-one or multi-graft plants (94, 97) place several clones on a single stock to flower, compare or display in limited space. Useful for compact test and pollination convenience, but not a substitute for clean stock performance: vigor balance, fruit set and long-term value remain unproven at assembly size.

Purpose, not default

Rescue, rapid test, display

Valid bench purposes: rescuing damaged but valuable material, rapid evaluation of a new clone on established roots, or assembling pollination or demonstration plants. Grafting is not a routine shortcut to commercial multiplication; compatibility, union strength, architecture and long-term yield need validation.

Validation & risk

Compatibility and disease transfer

Compatibility, union strength and long-term field value need multi-season validation — short-term take does not prove durable union or orchard merit. Grafts can move pathogens between stock and scion. Keep stock and scion sources documented, healthy and traceable; never graft to mask decline of a suspect mother.

Seed bench 81–87

When seed fits

Seed (81–87) fits breeding, not clone fidelity. Seedlings segregate genetically, are not true to the fruit or parent name, and carry a longer juvenile period before fruit traits can be evaluated. When breeding, keep seed lots separately coded from cutting lots and evaluate fruit, adaptation and pollination behavior before any release.

Segregation and isolation

Expect varied progeny: plan for isolation by lot, labeling at sowing, and disciplined rogueing. Juvenile time ranges widely by cross and environment; do not promise early fruit. Cutting fidelity remains the commercial baseline; seed and graft outputs should never be co-mingled under the same lot code.

Bench hygiene

Benches, tools, labels

Work on clean, disinfected benches. Use sharp, clean knives/razors; sterile or disinfected between mother plants or risk groups. Remove debris first, then disinfect per validated procedure. Keep scion, stock and seed lots physically separated and durably labeled at every hand.

Aftercare

Take vs fail

Stabilize grafts without deep burial; hold in shade with ventilation, light moisture and no rain splash. Take: scion remains turgid, union firms, new growth emerges without soft collapse. Fail: softening, discoloration, shrivel, oozing or pest ingress — isolate and reject.

Extend the lot record to include graft union details (stock source, scion source, graft type, date, operator) or seed lot (cross, sowing date, isolation). Link to cultivar identity and nursery QA above; identity uncertainty is a quality failure.

Seed — breeding bench

Seed 81–87 creates segregating progeny for selection over a longer juvenile period. Isolate lots, label at sowing, and evaluate fruit and adaptation before any release. Never co-mingle seedlings with cutting lots or assume parent clone fidelity.
