Guide 12 / Trade & export

Grades set price.
Paper grants access.

One biologically high yield produces several commercial segments. Destination tariff, plant-health and food-safety requirements change — confirm every code and permit before offering or shipping.

Not advice — a mapThis guide explains where to verify HS codes, duties, permits and documents. Official tariff schedules, import conditions and your broker/freight forwarder prevail.
01 / Grades & market segmentation
Domestic vs export, fresh vs processed

Sort to a buyer,
not to an average.

Domestic stalls may accept variable bract condition and size spread. Export retains tighter appearance, size bands, sugar-acid balance, defect limits and carton standards — plus residues, traceability and sometimes certification.

Grade segmentation — agree these in writing
SegmentTypical specificationRoute & tolerance
Export A / premiumUniform cultivar, size/count, ≥80% bract retention, intact skin, soluble-solids and firmness per cultivarLong-distance cold chain; low defect tolerance; often GtM/export carton
Export B / standardSame cultivar, minor bract/shape variation within allowed toleranceRegional export or distant domestic; defined second-grade price
Domestic freshWider size/spotted-bract tolerance, same food-safety and residues controlsShorter transit, faster turnover, less package protection
Processing / value-addedPigmented flesh or irregular size for pulp, frozen, juice, freeze-driedSeparate contract, lower fresh-market price assumption, processor specification
Reject / cullDecay, contamination, puncture, splits, overmaturity, pest injuryExclude from sale; record loss and disposition
Domestic

Faster feedback loop

Volume, eating quality and price discovery close to the farm, but the same hygiene, traceability and pesticide-record expectations apply.

Export

Higher spec, longer clock

Buyer specification, pack-out, pre-cooling and transit time interact; a shipment is judged at arrival, not at packhouse exit.

Processing

Outlet, not salvage

Processor grade must be contracted, not assumed; residues, color and soluble-solids may still apply and returns may not be permitted.

Global market context — commercial estimates, not forecasts. Tridge reports exporter and price trends for fresh dragon fruit; MarkNtel Advisors, Spherical Insights and Research and Markets publish paid market-size reports to 2030–2035 (see resources 112–116). Methodology, cultivar coverage, price basis (FOB vs wholesale) and year differ — treat them as background reading, not farm-gate price guarantees. Always price against a named buyer's written grade and seasonal window, and re-check lead sources at the link destinations because estimates revise.

02 / HS code & tariff family
0810 — other fruit, fresh

Start at 0810.90.
Finish in the national schedule.

The 6-digit HS nests dragon fruit under 0810.90 (other fresh fruit). Destinations add 2–4 digits and set duty, GST/VAT, and conditions that can change yearly. An example code alone never proves admissibility or rate.

Verification rule: Confirm the exact 8–10 digit code, duty/VAT, unit, seasonal measure and any additional phytosanitary or licensing condition in the current official tariff for the destination, then with your licensed customs broker. Examples above are from commercial references 123–128 and do not constitute a classification ruling.

Interactive HS lookup helper

Choose a destination archetype. The helper assembles an illustrative code and points you to the official schedule — defensive, no external fetch, results remain advisory.

03 / Phytosanitary & import permits
Destination determines admissibility

Permit, treatment,
inspection.

Food-safety controls and plant-health import conditions are separate layers. A phytosanitary certificate supports one layer; it does not imply the consignment meets buyer MRLs, organic rules or market grades.

Permits & conditions

Some origins require pre-approval

USDA APHIS “How to import” (resource 117) and Plant imports (118) explain permits, Federal Orders and species/commodity requirements. Federal Register notice for Vietnam (120) and Fresh Plaza on Ecuador (121) illustrate that permission is origin- and commodity-specific and may be conditioned on treatments and inspection.

Treatment & inspection

Common additional steps

Conditions may include approved orchard/packhouse registration, pre-export inspection, phytosanitary certificate with declarations, traceability, and post-entry monitoring depending on destination and quarantine pests. Requirements revise — check the current import condition database.

Detention risk

Change without notice

Overdue certificates, mis-declared HS, pest detection or residue exceedance can result in treatment, re-export or destruction. Plan for that timeline and cost before committing freight.

Examples, not exhaustive lists: Vietnam → US pathway (resources 117, 120, APHIS updates 119), Australia import conditions for Vietnamese dragon fruit (resource 106), Indian import procedures (resource 108), and US/Canada practical guide (resource 109). Each applies to a specific origin, commodity form and route — verify the current condition for your exact set.

04 / Export procedure, documents & cold chain
A checklist is not a certificate

Build the lot.
Move it intact.

Map documents and physical chain to the buyer's purchase order. Missing alignment among lot code, pack, temperature record and declarations is a common reason for hold or rejection.

01 / Eligibility

Market access first

Written buyer spec (cultivar, grade, carton, residues, certifications, lot code) plus confirmed import permit/condition for origin → destination → commodity form.

02 / Orchard & packhouse

Register and release

Approved supplier/field, harvest release, hygiene, phytosanitary field/area conditions where applicable, packhouse traceability and hold/release authority.

03 / Documents

Align paper to fruit

Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate with correct declaration, any import permit attached, transport and insurance documents — all sharing one lot/pallet identity.

04 / Pack & cold chain

Cool before you load

Buyer carton, airflow, pallet, pre-cooling record, calibrated temperature loggers, loading inspection, seal and set-point recorded; condensation plan at destination.

Quality

Inspection at packing

Grade to written spec, reconcile field quantity into packed/pulp/cull, retain reference sample and photos where required.

Finance & risk

Commercial layer

Incoterms, payment, insurance, currency, claims window, re-export liability — align with economics scenario tool downside cases.

Verification

Before commitment

Broker confirms HS, duty and document order; freight forwarder confirms booking; competent authority confirms admissibility for your exact route. Record who confirmed, when and the reference.

05 / Selected sources

All market figures are commercial aggregations with differing scope and year; HS and permit notes change. Use the destination's official tariff and import-condition database for the shipment date, with written broker/forwarder confirmation.
