01 / Baseline requirements
Start from the crop

Boundaries that
travel with you.

These ranges define where active growth, flowering and fruit development are plausible. Your soil, drainage, microclimate and management determine what actually succeeds.

Temperature

18–30 °C active growth

Growth slows below about 10–12 °C and is at risk near freezing; prolonged heat above ~38 °C can cause sunburn, flower injury and reduced set. Verify frost and heat extremes from local station data, not global averages.

Frost

Frost sensitivity, not hardiness

Young growth and open flowers are most vulnerable. A single advective frost or radiation frost pocket can damage tissue at 0 to –2 °C; duration, wind and prior hardening matter. Protected sites, elevation and structure change exposure, not biology.

Heat & sunburn

Light helps until it injures

High irradiance and canopy temperature drive bleaching, corking and fruit scald on exposed faces. Orientation, shade level, whitewash or net, and pruning balance light with protection and must be trialed locally.

Rainfall / drainage

Water needed, saturation harmful

Seasonal totals of 600–1 300 mm may suffice where irrigation bridges dry periods, but free drainage is decisive. Roots demand oxygen; mound or raised-bed where water ponds, and design surface drains before planting.

Humidity / disease

Wet canopies raise pressure

Prolonged leaf wetness, overhead wetting and dense canopies extend infection conditions for spot, canker and fruit rots. Space, airflow, training, drainage and zoned drip influence disease load alongside chemistry.

Elevation & pH

Air moves, chemistry counts

Elevation shifts diurnal range, frost risk and season length. Alkaline, sodic or strongly acid soils limit nutrition and drainage; laboratory tests guide adjustment. The practical field target is pH 6.0–7.0 where feasible, alongside salinity and structure.

From baseline to plan: once the site's stresses are mapped, adjust four levers — calendar (flush number and window), cultivar choice (pollination behavior verified locally, never assumed self-fertile), irrigation and nutrition (volume, frequency, EC, drainage), and protection and structure (windbreak, shade, raised bed, drainage, frost strategy). Each archetype below shows how.

Archetype 01 / Florida & US Gulf

Subtropical, humid, storm-prone

Climate pattern
Warm, high humidity; summer rain 1 000–1 500 mm, often calcareous or sandy soils; occasional radiation or advective frost north of Miami; hurricane wind exposure.
Key risks
Root saturation after heavy rain, bacterial and fungal pressure in wet canopy, wind damage, sunburn on exposed faces, localized frost pockets.
Typical windows*
Establishment any frost-free period; flowering flushes Mar–Nov with peaks May–Sep; multiple short cycles rather than one continental bloom.
Infrastructure
Raised beds or mounds, surface drains, windbreaks where lawful, 30–40% shade during establishment, removable frost cloth and microsprinklers on cold nights.
Cultivar notes
Assess flavor at shipping maturity and pollination labor under humid heat; verify pollination behavior in-block — do not assume a label claim of self-fertility.

Archetype 02 / India — semi-arid & tropical

Monsoon-driven, hot and variable

Climate pattern
Semi-arid Deccan and western zones with 400–800 mm plus monsoon (Jun–Sep) 700–1 200 mm in adjoining tropical belts; high evaporative demand; day >38 °C common pre-monsoon.
Key risks
Sunburn and flower abortion in heat waves, temporary waterlogging during monsoon, drought stress late season, soil salinity on irrigated tracts.
Typical windows*
Planting Jun–Jul post-pre-monsoon heat or Oct post-monsoon where irrigation assured; flowering Jun–Dec depending on zone and lawful induction choices.
Infrastructure
Drip with filtration matched to source, mulch and organic matter for structure, mounds where drainage limited, windbreak and shade nets trialed for scald; water harvesting or storage for dry months.
Cultivar notes
Test white- and red-flesh groups for heat tolerance, size and taste at harvest maturity; record set with and without assisted pollination — species or skin color does not predict self-fertility.

Archetype 03 / Vietnam & SE Asia

Tropical monsoon, long wet season

Climate pattern
Humid tropical; 1 500–2 200 mm, strong monsoon seasonality, Mekong Delta and coastal lowlands with alluvial soils; relatively stable warmth, high night temperatures.
Key risks
Canopy wetness and disease in prolonged rain, flood and poor drainage on low land, typhoon-season wind and logistics disruption, rapid postharvest deterioration in heat.
Typical windows*
Natural flushes Mar–Sep; off-season flowering via lighting where lawful and buyer-accepted extends the calendar — manage as a separate protocol, not a calendar shift alone.
Infrastructure
Broad raised beds with perimeter drains, strict canopy thinning for airflow, field-to-packhouse shade and prompt cooling, trellis anchors for wind.
Cultivar notes
Commercial white- and red-flesh types are both grown; evaluate bract retention, size grade and shelf performance per flush — retain pollination records for each clone.

Archetype 04 / Australia — east, west & south margins

Subtropical to warm-temperate gradient

Climate pattern
Queensland subtropical humid; inland semi-arid; southern NSW/Victoria cooler with frost; north has summer monsoon influence, south a shorter warm season.
Key risks
Sunburn and desiccation inland, high humidity disease north, frost and short season south, variable rainfall year to year.
Typical windows*
Flowering Nov–Apr in north/central, Dec–Mar in south; site and season determine whether 1 or 3–4 commercial flushes are realistic.
Infrastructure
Site selection avoiding frost hollows, 20–35% shade nets trialed, mulched mounds on heavy soils, irrigation with salinity awareness on bore water.
Cultivar notes
Compare early and late performers for season coverage; in marginal south prioritize microclimate and protection over cultivar claims — verify all pollination assumptions.

Archetype 05 / Israel & Middle East arid

Hot desert, high radiation, saline water risk

Climate pattern
Arid with 50–250 mm rain, very high irradiance and vapor-pressure deficit; cool desert nights; many sites rely on blended or desalinated irrigation.
Key risks
Heat and sunburn, aridity and rapid soil drying, salinity and sodicity, wide day-night temperature swings affecting growth and flower timing.
Typical windows*
Protected and open calendars can shift earlier or extend later with net-house climate buffering and precise fertigation; monitor actual flower cohorts, not dates.
Infrastructure
Net houses or shade where justified, pressure-compensated drip, filtration, EC/pH monitoring, leaching strategy where soils and water law allow, robust posts and anchors for wind gusts.
Cultivar notes
Favor clones that hold size and quality under high light; test pollen viability under hot-dry anthesis — do not carry temperate self-fertility claims across climates.

Archetype 06 / Temperate & marginal cold

Short season, frost determines viability

Climate pattern
Mediterranean or temperate with cool winters; growing season constrained by last and first frost; protected or urban microclimates often warmer than open field.
Key risks
Frost kill on stems and buds, insufficient heat units for complete fruit maturation, winter wet feet in unprotected soil, low light in protected structures.
Typical windows*
Field growth Apr–Oct (Northern Hemisphere) or equivalent; often 1–2 flushes outside; containers or greenhouses required to overwinter or to reach reliable size.
Infrastructure
Greenhouse/polytunnel or movable pots, raised free-draining media, thermal mass or heating only via qualified design, maximal light with frost protection — field rows only on proven frost-free slopes.
Cultivar notes
Prioritize known early maturity and compact vigor in trialed material — and still test set, flavor and firmness yourself; no species or breeder note overrides local frost and season data.
