Crop identity

Not a tree.
A canopy system.

Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus trained into an orchard architecture. Roots must remain aerated, canopies open, and compatible flowers supplied with viable pollen.

Commercial pitaya belongs mainly to the genus Selenicereus; many species were formerly placed in Hylocereus. Segmented, usually three-ribbed stems are called cladodes. They climb, spill over supports, and flower on mature hanging growth.

Identity caution: cultivar names, synonyms, plant identity, and reported pollination behavior can vary by nursery, source, and location. Never treat a profile or seller label as a self-fertility guarantee. Preserve voucher photos, invoices, source identity, and block-level test records.

Compatibility planning

Separate three questions that are often confused.

Self-fertile

A practical outcome: flowers set acceptable fruit using their own pollen under defined conditions. Claims still need local, replicated verification.

Self-compatible

A biological compatibility description. It does not prove the flower supplies abundant viable pollen or that natural transfer is adequate.

Self-sterile

Own pollen does not produce acceptable set under the test conditions; compatible cross-pollen and flowering overlap are required.

  • Map every clone and retain its source identity.
  • Record bud dates and actual anthesis by block.
  • Confirm flowering overlap across several flushes.
  • Test pollen viability with an appropriate local method.
  • Compare bagged self-pollination, known crosses, and open flowers.
  • Label pollen donor, recipient, date, weather, set, fruit size, and seed development.
  • Keep backup pollen only under a validated drying and storage protocol.
  • Design donor access and night labor before planting commercial area.
