Stage 01

Establishment

Trigger / observe

Drainage and trellis complete; hardened, traceable plants ready; roots beginning to occupy the field zone.

Operations

  • Water: map wetting and avoid saturation around limited roots.
  • Nutrition: use baseline analyses; avoid salt concentration.
  • Canopy: orient, protect and loosely tie selected leaders.
  • Plant health: inspect every plant; isolate decline.
  • Labor: reconcile plant, post, cultivar and source lot.

Stage 02

Vegetative / training

Trigger / observe

Active extension growth, roots established, leaders approaching or crossing the crown.

Operations

  • Water: adjust to canopy and weather; verify emitter output.
  • Nutrition: support steady growth from analysis and response.
  • Canopy: select leaders, maintain ties, distribute hangers.
  • Plant health: scout new tissue, bases, ties and weeds.
  • Labor: schedule repeated training passes and repairs.

Stage 03

Pre-flower

Trigger / observe

Mature hanging wood, expected seasonal window, first buds or verified induction decision.

Operations

  • Water: avoid abrupt moisture swings; account for rain.
  • Nutrition: reassess crop objective and analysis; avoid unverified boosters.
  • Canopy: finish major access work without stripping productive wood.
  • Plant health: inspect buds, flowers and disease hot spots.
  • Labor: forecast night crews, pollen, labels and lighting safely.

Stage 04

Bloom / pollination

Trigger / observe

Flowers near anthesis; compatible pollen and receptive flowers overlap.

Operations

  • Water: maintain consistent root conditions without wetting flowers unnecessarily.
  • Nutrition: avoid sudden salinity changes.
  • Canopy: preserve flower access and prevent abrasion.
  • Plant health: monitor flower pests, injury and weather effects.
  • Labor: pollinate where justified; label donor/recipient and time.

Stage 05

Fruit development

Trigger / observe

Confirmed set and enlarging fruit; crop load differs among posts or cultivars.

Operations

  • Water: follow demand, rainfall, root-zone and measured delivery.
  • Nutrition: match supply to analysis and crop load; monitor salts.
  • Canopy: support load and retain access; avoid unnecessary wounding.
  • Plant health: inspect fruit defects, pests and bags if used.
  • Labor: forecast harvest by tagged bloom cohorts.

Stage 06

Harvest / postharvest

Cultivar- and destination-specific maturity criteria reached; buyer and cold chain ready.

Operations

  • Canopy: maintain safe picking access; defer disruptive cuts.
  • Plant health: exclude damaged, decayed or contaminated fruit.

Stage 07

Post-cycle / rest

Main harvest flush complete; growth and weather indicate a lower-demand or renewal period.

Operations

  • Water: reduce only from measured lower demand, not by date.
  • Nutrition: review removal, tests and next-cycle need.
  • Canopy: prune for structure, airflow and safe load.
  • Plant health: remove suspect tissue hygienically and map hotspots.
  • Labor: close records, analyze pack-out and repair assets.

02 / Whole-farm readiness
Work outside the crop stage

Prepare systems.
Protect the crew.

Infrastructure, severe weather, and labor readiness need their own triggers. Assign responsible people and local dates rather than assuming an annual month.

Annual / before active season

Infrastructure inspection

  • Engineer or qualified person checks trellis, anchors and corrosion as appropriate.
  • Test pumps, backflow devices, valves, filters, meters, pressure and zone flow.
  • Service electrical, lighting, access, drainage, vehicles, cool rooms and monitoring devices.
  • Close prior repair actions and document release to service.
Before expected buds

Pre-season readiness

  • Confirm buyer, maturity, pack, food-safety and residue requirements.
  • Verify cultivar map, pollen plan, tools, labels, cartons and cold-chain capacity.
  • Forecast flowers, crop load, night work, harvest peaks and backup staffing.
